Tick Exterminator

Wood ticks, also referred to as American dog ticks, are prevalent in wooded regions and have a penchant for attaching themselves to both animals and humans. These ticks are characterized by their reddish-brown coloration and possess eight legs, distinguishing them from other tick species. Typically larger in size compared to their counterparts, female wood ticks can grow up to the size of a small grape, while males are smaller in stature.

One of the concerning aspects of wood ticks is their potential to transmit various diseases, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and tick paralysis. Due to these health risks, it's crucial to take preventive measures when venturing into wooded areas and to conduct thorough tick checks on both yourself and your pets after outdoor activities. If you discover a tick embedded in your skin, it's advisable to promptly remove it using tweezers and cleanse the bite site with soap and water to minimize the risk of infection.

Deer ticks, also recognized as blacklegged ticks, are prevalent in wooded and grassy regions across North America. They earn their name due to their propensity for feeding on the blood of deer during adulthood. These ticks are diminutive, often resembling the size of a poppy seed or a pencil tip. Sporting a distinct reddish-brown body and black legs, they latch onto their hosts using their mouthparts to feed on blood.

In the state of Florida, several types of ticks can be found, including:

  1. Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum): This tick species is commonly found in wooded and grassy areas throughout Florida. It is identifiable by the white dot or "lone star" marking on the back of adult females. Lone star ticks can transmit diseases such as ehrlichiosis and southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI).
  2. American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis): Also known as wood ticks, American dog ticks are prevalent in Florida and often inhabit wooded and grassy areas. They are larger ticks and can transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia.
  3. Blacklegged Tick (Ixodes scapularis): While less common in Florida compared to other regions, blacklegged ticks can still be found in certain areas of the state. These ticks are known to transmit Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.
  4. Gulf Coast Tick (Amblyomma maculatum): This species of tick is primarily found in coastal areas of Florida. Gulf Coast ticks can transmit diseases such as Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis and Ehrlichia ewingii infection.
  5. Brown Dog Tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus): Brown dog ticks are commonly found in Florida and are known to infest homes and kennels. While they primarily feed on dogs, they can also bite humans and transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever and canine ehrlichiosis.

These are some of the common types of ticks that can be found in the state of Florida. Understanding their habits and preferred habitats can help individuals take appropriate precautions to prevent tick bites and reduce the risk of tick-borne illnesses.
