Centipede Exterminator
Centipedes, characterized by their numerous legs arranged in distinct body segments, are swift-moving pests known for preying on other insects using their venomous claws. Typically solitary in nature, encountering several centipedes may indicate an isolated incident rather than an infestation. With anywhere from 15 to 300 legs, centipedes have elongated bodies flattened from top to bottom, often appearing yellowish-brown with lengthy antennae. While they are less common than millipedes, they are larger and move faster.
On the other hand, millipedes share similarities with centipedes in their elongated, multi-legged appearance but differ in their body segments, boasting two sets of legs per segment. Unlike centipedes, millipedes do not bite and tend to hide during the day, moving slowly compared to their counterparts. Notably, millipedes are often spotted curled up indoors or near sliding glass doors, typically in dark brown or black hues with occasional orange or red markings. While smaller than centipedes, they are known to gather in large numbers, suggesting the presence of more individuals if one is sighted. When disturbed, millipedes may emit an odor and can easily break apart when handled.

In Florida, several species of centipedes and millipedes are commonly encountered:
Centipedes:
- Florida Blue Centipede (Hemiscolopendra marginata): This species is native to Florida and is known for its striking blue coloration. It is often found in wooded areas and gardens.
- House Centipede (Scutigera coleoptrata): Although not native to Florida, the house centipede is commonly found in homes across the state. It is characterized by its long, slender body and numerous legs.
Millipedes:
- Florida Ivory Millipede (Chicobolus spinigerus): This species is native to Florida and is commonly found in moist habitats such as forests and swamps. It is known for its ivory-colored body and defensive behavior when threatened.
- Florida Megarian Banded Millipede (Orthomorpha coarctata): Found in various habitats throughout Florida, this species is characterized by its distinctive banded coloration and can often be found in leaf litter and soil.
These are the most common types of centipedes and millipedes that can be found in the state of Florida. While some species are native to the region, others may have been introduced through human activities. Understanding the different species and their habits can help homeowners identify and manage infestations effectively.
